Podcast From The Yellow Room IX Dedicated To Hugh

Recorded on Tuesday 9th June with my old pal, Chris Taberham. In this rambling tribute to Hugh Hopper, we talk about how Soft Machine's Third album inadvertently cemented our friendship back in the early '70s, the obscure charm of the click of the fuzz-box, letters to and from Hugh, the appeal of a track like Facelift and our favourite Hugh Hopper tunes.

Dedicated To Hugh
tracklist

"Slightly All The Time" by Soft Machine from Third (excerpt)
"Virtually Part 3" by Soft Machine from Fourth (excerpt)
"Golden Section" by Isotope from Illusion
"Illusion" by Isotope from Golden Section
"Darker Brighter" by Gilgamesh from Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into
"Two Rainbows Daily" by Hugh Hopper & Alan Gowen from Two Rainbows Daily
"Gesolreut" by Soft Machine from Six (excerpt)
"Facelift" by Delta Sax Quartet (featuring Hugh Hopper) from Dedicated to You... (excerpt)
"Epilogue" by Delta Sax Quartet from Dedicated to You...

Thanks to Chris Taberham, Cuneiform Records, Esoteric Recordings, Moonjune Records, Sony BMG and Barry Stock

As my own little tribute to H.H. I've ordered 1984 and when the wages come in I shall take a punt at Hopper Tunity Box..... I'm sure I won't be disappointed!

hey sid, i just listened to the hugh hopper podcast - i didn't listen to soft machine - and i've no idea why - i was listening to everyone else at the time. so thanks for the great introduction. it was also really great to be along for the ride with you and chris. it took me back to many great evenings over stacks of vinyl (and then cassettes and then cds) with my mates through the seventies, eighties and nineties. steven

Thanks for this, guys.
It was wonderful hearing your experiences coming across and listening to this stuff. I too have most of this from back then and it brought back a lot of things that I've missed recently.
I hope Hugh got a sense of how much we valued what he did. He really did shape the way I listen to music.(How many others consciously seek out music by bass players!!!!!)

Hi you guys

I just listened to your podcast this morning with coffee in hand and headphones on. Thanks so much, i loved it. I have been so bummed about Hugh's passing and beside talking with Elaine diFalco, I have not had the chums around to yak about Hugh. If I lived in your town, I would have rung you up to talk about those old fuzz box clicks etc.
Elaine diFalco and I have had the music for Hughscore IV sitting around for a few years and now we will begin to put that record together although sadly, without Hugh. I did just go to a used music store and find a old analog fuzzbox that just screamed Hugh! so man, I am going to do my best to play his fuzz parts on this collection of tunes.
Digging through archives around the house I found a version of Hoppertunity Box we recorded for Delta Flora that this guy from Cuneiform records rejected but now that we are free from that dude I think we will put it out on the next Hughscore cd. Anyway, I am blabbing and the coffee has got me twitching so I will stop.
Again, I loved the Hughcast.
Fred
