Ah the B52's are one of my guilty pleasures I think. Kate Pierson's vocals are still some of the best I've ever heard. Roam on Cosmic Thing still leaves me in a state of senses heightened. I love it!
Hi there Jase, yep - I have to agree with you about Roam. She's superb. Possibly my favourite track would be Give Me Back My Man from Wild Planet - gives me the shivers when that chorus blasts in "I'll give you fish/I'll give you candy". They don't write them like that any more!
Ricky Wilson's guitar was what got me. I saw them on the Mesopotamia tour at Bob Carr Civic Center in Orlando in 1982. I had enjoyed and danced to their records, but had no idea about them as a live act. It turns out they were absolutely stunning, making a giant sound out of a bunch of rinky-dink-looking equipment (a la Elvis Costello and the Attractions). Ricky's guitar playing was stunning, unique, and perfect. They changed after his death, and although they found greater success, I miss his Mosrite sound.
I remember the first time I heard Rock Lobster. I had never heard anything like it before. To this day those vocals, and Fred's crazy sounding delivery can give me goosebumps. Song for Future Generation is on my desert island list.
I’m a freelance writer from North East England living in Whitley Bay. As well as writing sleevenotes for independent and major record labels, web content management, and contributions to both regional and national press, I’m the author of a critically acclaimed rock biography, In The Court of King Crimson (2001), and Northstars (2005), Granada TV’s Royal Television Award-winning series profiling musicians from the North East region. I’ve been blogging since 1999, commenting on music in particular and the arts in general, as well as whatever takes my fancy.
