Gavin Harrison & 05Ric Drop

Fearsome talents…

Drop
Gavin Harrison & 05Ric

Squatter Madras

As might be expected for people totally comfortable playing in time signatures that read more like mobile telephone numbers, there’s no end of sinuous, knotty noodlage to be found between Porcupine Tree and all-round percussion guru, Gavin Harrison, and bassist, 05Ric.

Brought together after a chance encounter via myspace, Drop has more than a whiff of old-school jazz-rock fusion as the duo perambulates around their respective kit on this dexterous collaboration.

Within this instrumental prowess winds a series of lyrics emotively sung by Ric. Be warned though, these melodies can be devilishly slippery to grab a hold of, snaking and circulating between Ric’s torrid tapping and the pointillist accents and pulses that Harrison delights in uncovering throughout the duration of this record.

With some guest atmospherics from guitarist Robert Fripp, things really open up with the addition of Gary Sanctuary’s piano on “Where Are You Going.” And with ex-Hatifeld Dave Stewart tempted to make a Canterbury sound or two on the galloping riff-fest, "Centred", what’s not to like?
